Today's Flag

is: Togo - in modern times, a protectorate of Germany located on the Bight of Benin in the Gulf of Guinea of Africa.  Following the surrender of the German administration on 26 August 1914, a joint British and French military government was established.  By 1922, the western part of Togoland was partitioned off by the League of Nations into the British Gold Coast [Ghana,] while the eastern territories were transferred to the administration of France.  France continued to govern through the U.N. Trusteeship Council, with Togo becoming an autonomous nation under France in 1956, followed by independence in 1960.  While the current constitution of Togo establishes it as a parliamentary democracy, a coup d’état in 1967 led to single-party rule until 1991.  Since then, great strides have been made to establish a multi-party system and fair elections.  The main industries of Togo are agriculture, services, with growing mining, processing, cement and textile sectors.  The flag is the winning contest entry by artist Paul Ahyi, who designed it while a student at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to Togo in 1959 to become one of the most important African artists of the time.  Adopted in 1960, the Pan-African colours are separated into five stripes, which symbolize the five geographical regions of Togo.  The red canton refers to the patriotism and loyalty of the people of Togo, while the white star symbolizes life, peace, dignity, and independence.
