Queen's Personal Canadian Flag
Platinum Jubilee:
Today's flag is Her Majesty's Personal Canadian Flag, to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Her Majesty's accession to the throne of the United Kingdom. On this date in 1952, Princess Elizabeth was on royal tour in Kenya with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, when her beloved father, HM King George VI passed away in his sleep at Sandringham House. Rushing back home to mourn with a bereaved nation, the former Princess Elizabeth was proclaimed by her Accession Council to be "Queen Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God Queen of this Realm and of all Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith," at just age 25.
Today's Flag:
Traditionally, the British monarch uses a banner based on the coat of arms of the United Kingdom and Elizabeth adopted the one that her father had used. However by 1960, it was felt that special flags could be employed to emphasize Queen Elizabeth's position as head of state in each Commonwealth realm as opposed to the symbol of the British Monarch. The flag shown here was produced by a team from the Canadian Heraldic Authority and was approved by Her Majesty in 1961. You will see this flag unfurled above any building, ship, aircraft (while on the ground) or vehicle that Her Majesty is occupying. The royal standard of the sovereign is never half-masted, since there is always a monarch on the Canadian throne. It also supersedes all other flags when it is flown.
